Just as the name suggests, sunscreen is supposed to protect you against the harmful effects of the sun, and therefore one of the most important factors to consider is that the sun protection factor of whatever type of sunscreen you intend to buy is on the higher side. Also of importance to consider is whether the sun screen is water resistant or water proof.

The first should refer to the ability of the sun screen to maintain its degree of protection from sun burn, forty minutes after it has been exposed to water. The latter refers to a scenario where the chemical is able to maintain protection eighty minutes after exposure to water. Make sure that you have considered the activity which you will be involved in while using the chemical, since there are some sunscreen chemicals which will not have oil to avoid giving you that greasy feeling.
