Scabies is a contagious disease which spreads through any form of physical contact. Though the disease is very difficult to detect at early stages yet even in this form it can spread quite rapidly.

Scabies is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The overt signs start appearing in 2-6 weeks when the itching starts. The itching gets worse at night and red pimple like rashes start spreading over the body. For the first few weeks itching is subtle, causing discomfort at night

Within a month or two the itching almost becomes relentless causing sleeplessness. Tiny threadlike 2-15 mm long burrows appear over the body. Secondary infection of impetigo may occur after scratching. Cellulitis may also occur, resulting in localized swelling, redness and fever.

Generally diagnosis is made by finding burrows. Positive diagnosis is made when the mite, ova, or fecal pellets are found within these burrows. Topical medications are generally given as cure.
